“Diamonds Are Forever”. This phrase was coined in the late 1940s
by the De Beers Consolidated Mining Co. in reference to the
presentation of diamond rings before marriage. The idea was that
only the extraordinary durability of diamonds could do justice to
the eternal love signified by the act of marriage. Today, a
diamond ring is an absolute necessity when proposing, and diamonds
are among the most valuable stones on Earth.
However, there is a great deal of variance when it comes to the
value of diamonds and diamond jewelry. This variance generally has
to do with diamond quality. Unfortunately, the quality of a
diamond is extremely difficult for a layperson to determine. While
professional diamond buyers are easily able to appraise the value
of a diamond, ordinary men who wish to sell diamonds often find
themselves lost in a market they know nothing about. That's why
today we're going to over what's important in the valuation of a
diamond.
When evaluating a diamond, the most important things to remember
are the 4 C's: Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat. Of these, the
easiest for a layperson to judge are Color and Carat. Color refers
to how close a diamond is to being entirely colorless. The closer
a diamond is to being truly colorless, the more valuable it is. By
contrast, diamonds with yellow or brown tints to them are far less
valuable, as they are much more common. A Carat is a unit of
measurement that represents a diamonds weight. One carat is
roughly equivalent 0.2 grams, and can generally be estimated from
the size of the rock.
The second two qualities that diamond buyers focus on when
evaluating diamonds are Cut and Clarity, both of which can be
difficult for the average person to properly estimate. The “cut”
of a diamond refers to the design of the diamond and how well said
rock reflects light. Therefore, the best cut diamond are also the
brightest diamonds. Finally, the clarity of a diamond refers to
the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes, both
of which lower the quality of a diamond. However, it's difficult
for one to spot these without both a decent microscope and the
training of a diamond buyer.
Finally, if selling diamond jewelry, one should check the fit of
the diamond in the metal. The better the fit, the more value the
jewelry possesses. While these tips will help you get a sense of
the value of your diamond, they won't get you an exact appraisal.
